The City of Mount Vernon is a great place to raise a family! The community comes together to celebrate many annual events and the city has a Community Wellness Center known as the Lester Buresh Center (LBC). The City of Mount Vernon boasts 7 parks, a swimming pool, a disc golf course, a 9-hole golf course, and a community athletic complex. ExploreU – Math & Computer Science workshops for MS girls completing 6th, 7th & 8th grades
Registration for ExploreU is now open! As you may know, ExploreU is designed for middle school girls completing 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. We plan to offer new exciting workshops this summer introducing more math and computer science, and new fun Treasure Hunt! This year’s camp is going to be at Kirkwood Regional Center in Coralville. We will have two sections for newcomers June 13-18 and July 11-16, 2022, and one section for returners June 13-18, 2022.

The program cost is $100. We will continue to offer Transamerica scholarships for low-income students to cover the camp post.

Odyssey Theatre for the Young of Art Summer Workshop

Odyssey Theatre for the Young of Art Summer Drama Workshop proudly presents the Wizard of Oz with two shows only: Friday, June 24th at 7pm and Saturday, June 25th at 2pm. General Admission is seven dollars with tickets sold at the door an hour prior to each show, by cash, check or Venmo. Performances will be held in the Mount Vernon Middle School District Auditorium, 525 Palisades Rd, Mount Vernon, IA 52314. Questions, please contact Steffran5@gmail.com.

Southeast Linn Community Center – Pool Scholarships

Southeast Linn Community Center is offering scholarships for Mount Vernon Pool passes for those with financial need. Scholarships are for residents of the Lisbon and Mount Vernon school districts. A limited number of scholarships are available. Sign up opens Thursday, April 14th and continues until scholarship funds are depleted. No early sign-ups or holds will be accepted. Beginning the 14th, scholarship request forms can be completed online at www.selinn.org or paper copies will be available at 108 S. Washington St in Lisbon during SELCC open hours, 9-4 Monday-Friday & until 5 on Thursdays. Paper applications can also be left in the SELCC drop box outside of business hours. Scholarships will cover 80% of the cost and recipients will be responsible for 20%, which must be paid at the time of application. Payments may be made via credit card, cash (exact amount only) or check. Call 319-455-2844 with questions. Donations to this scholarship fund are also welcome. Please indicate “pool pass fund” when making a donation.
